The Challenge
West Linton is a picturesque conservation village in the Scottish Borders, near the Pentland Hills. The client’s home was a characterful cottage on a quiet residential lane — full of charm, but with walls that were far from flat.
They wanted to refresh two key areas with bold Little Greene wallpapers: Stag Toile in burgundy for the living room, and Wild Chervil in blue for the staircase. Both are intricate patterns requiring high precision.
The staircase posed the biggest challenge — limited access, tight angles, and uneven surfaces that needed careful preparation before any paper could go up.
Our Approach
Preparation
Each wall section was carefully filled, sanded, and lined where needed to create a stable base on the uneven surfaces. The staircase required working at height with limited space — methodical, steady work with no room for shortcuts.
Living Room — Stag Toile
The burgundy Stag Toile was applied to the living room feature wall. The large-scale, detailed pattern demanded exact alignment at every join. We took time to ensure each drop matched perfectly.
Staircase — Wild Chervil
The blue Wild Chervil pattern transformed the staircase from a plain passageway into a striking feature. Working around the tight turns and angles required patience, precision cutting, and careful paste control. All furnishings and carpet were fully protected throughout.
The Result
Both areas have been completely transformed. The burgundy Stag Toile brings warmth and drama to the living room, while the blue Wild Chervil turns the staircase into a real talking point. The patterns sit flat and true on walls that are anything but straight — proof that thorough preparation makes all the difference.
