Key Challenge
Painting custom MDF joinery with oak accents to match existing Farrow & Ball walls
The Challenge
A returning client at their Lennox Street home in Canonmills. We’d previously redecorated the entire property, and now they’d commissioned A.J. Milne Bespoke Carpentry to build a corner bench and shelving unit for their kitchen.
The bench was MDF with a solid oak seat and lift-up top for hidden storage. Matching built-in shelves above. The challenge: painting the MDF to perfectly match the existing Farrow & Ball Au Lait walls, while treating the oak bench top to match other timber pieces in the kitchen.
Our Approach
MDF Preparation and Painting
All MDF surfaces were filled, sanded, and primed with Tikkurila Otex Adhesion Primer — essential for proper paint adhesion on smooth MDF. After a second sanding, we applied Tikkurila Everal Aqua Matt [10], colour-matched to Farrow & Ball’s Au Lait for a seamless look with the existing walls.
Oak Treatment
The solid oak bench top was treated with a custom Osmo Oil blend, matched to other timber pieces in the client’s kitchen for visual consistency. This protects the wood while keeping its natural warmth and grain visible.
All work was done with the kitchen in use — surfaces protected, workspace kept clean, and the client able to carry on with their day.
The Result
The bench and shelving look like they’ve always been part of the room. The colour match to the existing walls is seamless, the oak top ties in with the kitchen’s timber elements, and the hidden storage is completely discreet. Another successful collaboration with A.J. Milne — and another happy returning client.
