Painting a custom MDF bookshelf to blend seamlessly with existing Farrow & Ball walls
The Challenge
Same client, same address on Lennox Street — a returning customer who’d already had their home redecorated and a corner bench painted by us. This time, they’d commissioned another piece from A.J. Milne Bespoke Carpentry: a built-in MDF bookshelf.
The bookshelf needed to disappear into the room — painted to exactly match the Farrow & Ball Au Lait walls so it looked built-in rather than added on.
Our Approach
Preparation
All MDF surfaces were filled and sanded, then primed with Tikkurila Otex Adhesion Primer. An industrial extractor was used for dust control throughout — keeping the client’s home clean during the work.
Painting
Two coats of Tikkurila Everal Aqua Matt [10], colour-matched to the existing wall colour (Farrow & Ball Au Lait). The same paint system we’d used on the previous bench project — proven to give a smooth, durable finish on MDF.
The Result
The bookshelf blends effortlessly into the room. Unless you look closely, you’d think it was an original feature rather than a recent addition. That’s the goal with bespoke joinery painting — the finish should be invisible, letting the craftsmanship and the books take centre stage.
