The Challenge
The client had a stunning summerhouse built a couple of years earlier with beautiful wood cladding. But Edinburgh’s weather had taken its toll — the original wood treatment from the builder had faded significantly due to sun exposure and harsh Scottish conditions.
The wood needed more than a simple refresh. It needed a treatment system that would restore its appearance, protect against UV damage, and provide lasting defence against rain, frost, and temperature changes.
Our Approach
Assessment and Preparation
We assessed the condition of all exterior cladding, cleaned the surfaces, and lightly sanded to create a clean base for the new treatment. All surrounding garden areas were protected throughout.
Osmo Oil Treatment
We chose Osmo oil — a specialist exterior wood treatment that combines natural oil and wax. The oil penetrates deep into the wood fibres for protection from within, while the wax creates a water-repellent barrier on the surface. It’s specifically designed for exterior woodwork, providing UV protection, breathability, and resistance to rot, warping, and cracking.
Application
Two coats applied by brush for maximum penetration and an even finish. Each coat was allowed to dry fully before the next. The workspace was kept clean and tidy throughout, with all garden furniture and planting protected.
The Result
The summerhouse looks brand new. The vibrant colour and natural grain of the wood have been completely revived. The Osmo treatment will protect the cladding for years to come — and when it eventually needs refreshing, it can be recoated without stripping, making future maintenance simple.
