Hand-Painted Seascape Mural in an Edinburgh Living Room
Original mural artwork created by artist Kirsteen Lyons-Benson.
Project Overview
This bespoke hand-painted wall mural was created for an Edinburgh living room, transforming an entire wall into a calming coastal scene inspired by Scotland’s coastline. The mural was painted directly onto the wall by Edinburgh artist Kirsteen Lyons-Benson BA (Hons) — not printed, not transferred, but built up by hand, brushstroke by brushstroke.
The design was developed specifically for this room, taking into account the natural light, the scale of the wall, and the existing furnishings. The result is a mural that feels like a natural extension of the space — bringing the atmosphere of the Scottish coast into the heart of the home.
About the Artwork
The mural depicts a sweeping coastal landscape — sandy dunes giving way to rolling waves, with headlands receding into an atmospheric sky. Kirsteen’s style blends impressionist realism with expressive, fluid brushwork, creating a sense of light and movement across the wall.
The colour palette centres on luminous blues, soft teals and sandy golds — tones drawn directly from Scotland’s coastal landscapes. Up close, the texture and energy of the brushstrokes are visible; from across the room, the scene draws you in with depth and atmosphere.
Every detail was painted entirely by hand. There are no prints, stencils or digital elements — just paint, brush and the artist’s skill.
The Painting Process
Creating a hand-painted mural is a collaborative process that unfolds over several stages:
- Consultation — Kirsteen met with the client to discuss the vision for the room, the mood they wanted to create, and the colours and imagery they were drawn to.
- Concept design — A concept was developed based on the room’s dimensions, the direction of natural light, and the client’s brief. The design was refined and approved before any painting began.
- Wall preparation — Our decorating team prepared the wall surface — filling, sanding and priming — to create a smooth, stable canvas for the artwork.
- Painting the mural — Kirsteen worked on-site over several sessions, building up layers of colour, form and detail directly onto the wall. Each session allowed previous layers to dry before adding depth and refinement.
- Finishing and sealing — Once complete, the mural was sealed with a protective finish to ensure the artwork remains vibrant and durable for years to come.
