The Challenge
Royal Terrace is one of Edinburgh’s most elegant addresses — part of the UNESCO-listed New Town, overlooking the private Regent Gardens and just a short walk from Calton Hill. The sitting room had recently undergone refurbishment work, including the removal of a kitchen and fresh plastering on part of the space.
With newly plastered surfaces needing careful preparation before painting could begin, the brief was clear: a smooth, even finish throughout — no uneven absorption, no patchy coats — combined with a light, airy palette that would complement the property’s historic character.
Our Approach
Surface Preparation
Newly plastered areas were carefully sealed and primed to prevent uneven paint absorption. Surfaces were filled and sanded throughout to create a smooth, consistent base.
Ceiling and Cornice
The ceiling and period cornice were spray-painted in crisp white — achieving an even, efficient result while respecting the fine detail of this Georgian room.
Wall Colour
Walls were hand-painted in a breezy light blue chosen by the client — a calm, inviting tone that brings brightness to the space without competing with its period character.
Woodwork
Skirtings, door, windows, and architrave were all finished in brilliant white for a clean, classic contrast that frames the room neatly.
