Open Plan Flat Transformation in Gorebridge

The Challenge

This open plan flat sits within a historic building in Gorebridge. The high ceilings and exposed wooden beams asked for careful access at height, and the floors had been freshly sanded — meaning every surface needed protecting throughout. The client wanted a modern Farrow & Ball colour scheme that respected the historic architectural features.

Our Approach

1. Protection. Newly sanded oak flooring carefully covered and protected before work began.
2. Walls and ceilings. Cleaned, prepared, filled and sanded for a smooth finish. The kitchen ceiling finished in durable white matt emulsion; the main living areas in Farrow & Ball Cornforth White No. 228.
3. Feature wall and selected skirtings. Finished in Farrow & Ball Down Pipe — a calm contrast against the soft Cornforth White used elsewhere.
4. Woodwork. All doors, frames and skirting boards sanded, filled, primed and finished in durable eggshell.
5. Original beams. Wooden ceiling beams refreshed with a brown wood stain to enhance their warmth and natural texture, worked safely at height.

The Result

The completed space feels fresh, elegant and full of light. The colour palette modernises the flat while respecting the building’s historic character, and the soft neutral walls and darker feature elements give the open plan room depth and definition. The restored beams sit naturally against the white ceiling, and the wood-burning stove anchors the room.
