Hallway Transformation – Historic Royal Terrace, Edinburgh
We recently completed a hallway redecoration in one of Royal Terrace’s elegant period properties. Like many older buildings, it came with its own set of challenges—but also great potential for transformation.
The Challenges
-
Water damage caused by gutter issues and a cracked wall
-
Fresh plaster patches from recent electrical work
-
A once-beige colour scheme disrupted by patchy touch-ups and swatches
Our Approach
Once the structural repairs were sorted, we stepped in to restore and elevate the space.
Surface Prep & Painting
We repaired water damage, smoothed over plasterwork, and sealed cracks to create a clean surface. The ceiling was painted in a crisp white matt emulsion, while the walls were finished in Farrow & Ball’s Cromarty—a soft, pale green that feels both fresh and timeless.
Woodwork Detailing
After sanding and filling any imperfections, we painted the woodwork in white gloss for a classic finish. Three built-in cupboard doors were colour-matched in Cromarty eggshell, introducing a subtle colour drenching effect—bringing a modern touch to this historic space.
The Result
-
A bright, cohesive hallway that now feels open and elegant
-
Restored surfaces that blend seamlessly with the property’s character
-
A soft, considered palette that highlights the original architecture
This project is a perfect example of how thoughtful preparation and on-trend design choices can rejuvenate even the most challenging spaces in older homes.
