Key Challenge

Translating detailed artistic concepts onto large wall surfaces while maintaining proportion and visual balance

The Challenge

A modern flat near the Water of Leith in Edinburgh — clean, bright, and in good condition, but entirely lacking in personality. The client wanted to transform two rooms into something truly personal and meaningful, moving completely away from the neutral white-box finish of a modern property.

The goal was ambitious: two entirely different bespoke murals, each designed to create a distinct atmosphere. The bedroom needed to feel like a restful sanctuary — calm, grounded, and rooted in the natural world. The living room, by contrast, needed to feel energising and uplifting — vivid, expressive, and full of life.

Both murals had to be developed from scratch: agreed with the client, then executed at a scale that would genuinely transform each space without overpowering it.

Our Approach

Design and Consultation
The project began with a creative consultation to develop and agree the mural designs with the client. For the bedroom, the concept centred on a highland stag set against mountains and bare winter trees — a powerful but peaceful scene. For the living room, a Viking longship prow was placed at the water’s edge, surrounded by wildflowers and framed by a mountainous backdrop.

Materials
All work was carried out using Artists’ Quality Winsor & Newton acrylic paints and brushes — chosen for their depth of pigment, strong colour, and long-term durability on wall surfaces.

The Painting Process
Each mural followed a structured multi-stage process:

  • Sketching — each design was carefully drawn directly onto the wall to establish composition, proportion, and flow within the space
  • Underpainting — background tones and depth were blocked in to establish the overall mood before detail work began
  • Layering — colour, detail, and texture were built up gradually through multiple layers, allowing the designs to develop while staying true to the original vision

Throughout, close attention was paid to scale and visual balance, ensuring each mural felt like a natural part of its room — not something imposed on it.

The Result

Two rooms transformed beyond recognition. The bedroom now carries a calm, grounded atmosphere — the stag mural adding warmth and a sense of the natural world to what was previously a plain white space. The living room feels vibrant and full of energy, the Viking ship scene bringing colour, movement, and character to the focal wall.

Together, the two murals turned a standard modern flat into a home with genuine personality — each space with its own distinct mood and identity.

The client’s response said it all: “You are a credit to what you do.” So pleased with the result, they have already commissioned a third mural for the future.
