Exterior Painting and Restoration of a Traditional Bungalow in Ravelston, Edinburgh

The Challenge

The bungalow’s textured render, decorative timber gable, doors, guttering and downpipes had been exposed to Scottish weather. Cracked and peeling paint around the timber risked letting in moisture, while the render needed preparation before fresh masonry paint could adhere and provide an even finish.

Our Approach

1. Removed loose and flaking paint, then raked out, filled and sanded cracks and minor render damage.
2. Treated affected areas for organic growth and stabilised powdery or unstable surfaces before painting.
3. Prepared the front and side elevations, then applied Johnstone’s Brilliant White exterior masonry paint.
4. Restored the front door, side door and decorative timber gable using primer, undercoat and Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin in Warm Pewter.
5. Prepared the guttering and downpipes, treated rusted areas and spot-primed exposed metal before repainting them in Warm Pewter.

The Result

The refreshed Brilliant White masonry gives the bungalow a clean exterior while retaining the texture of its traditional render. Warm Pewter woodwork, guttering and downpipes tie the doors and decorative gable into a restrained finish that suits the property.
