The Challenge
A modern tenement home office in East Craigs, between Corstorphine Hill and the Gyle. The clients had recently moved in and wanted to upgrade a plain room with built-in MDF cabinetry and slatted wall panelling — all finished in standard white with no visual flow or personality.
The goal: a calm, elegant study space that felt bespoke and intentional — somewhere they’d actually want to work from home. All achieved through paint alone, with no structural changes.
Our Approach
Preparation
Thorough prep of all MDF and wall surfaces — filling, sanding, and priming with specialist MDF adhesion primer. Precision masking around slatted panelling, radiator pipework, and cabinetry edges.
Colour Scheme — Farrow & Ball Selvedge
We applied Selvedge (a soft blue-grey) to walls, cabinetry, radiators, and panelling for a fully cohesive look. The ceiling was finished in Skimming Stone (warm neutral) to keep things light above. Multiple coats for full, even coverage on every surface.
Detail Work
The vertical slatted centre section of the bookcase became a statement feature, with each slat painted to match the surrounding cabinetry. Crisp detailing around every corner, every edge, every slat.
The Result
The room has been completely transformed — from a plain white box to a calm, crafted study with real personality. The soft blue-grey creates a focused, restful atmosphere, and the cohesive colour scheme makes the cabinetry and panelling feel fully bespoke. A proper work-from-home space, achieved entirely through careful painting.
