The Challenge
The owners of this modern Stockbridge home had just installed a brand-new IKEA kitchen. The layout was exactly what they wanted — smart, functional, well-designed. But the standard colour options didn’t feel right. They wanted something softer, warmer, and more personal.
The question was whether standard off-the-shelf cabinets could be made to look and feel like a custom kitchen — without the custom kitchen price tag. The answer was yes, but it required the right paint, the right technique, and the kind of preparation that most decorators skip.
Our Approach
Offsite Collection and Preparation
We collected all doors and drawer fronts and brought them back to our workshop — keeping disruption in the kitchen to a minimum. In the workshop, every piece was sanded on both sides, primed, smoothed with a fine abrasive, then dusted and degreased to create a clean, stable base. No paint fumes in your home, no dust on your worktops.
Spray Application — Tikkurila Helmi 10
We sprayed each door and drawer front with Tikkurila Helmi 10 in the client’s chosen light blue — a high-quality furniture paint designed specifically for cabinetry. Over the top, we applied a 2-component satin water-based lacquer for added durability. This lacquer is resistant to knocks, stains, grease, and everyday kitchen wear.
On-Site Completion
Back in the kitchen, we hand-painted the fixed cabinet sides in the same colour. Once everything was reinstalled, we handled any wall touch-ups needed from the installation to leave the space looking flawless.
The Result
The kitchen is unrecognisable. What started as a standard IKEA setup now looks and feels like a fully custom kitchen. The bespoke light blue brings warmth and personality to the space, and the lacquer finish means it’ll stay looking that way — no chipping, no yellowing, no wear marks from daily use.
