Custom Billy Bookcase Library Transformation in Edinburgh Restalrig
Project Overview
The Challenge
Our team was presented with an exciting project in the Restalrig area of Edinburgh, where our client envisioned transforming one of their rooms into a bespoke library room. The foundation of the project was ready-assembled IKEA Billy Bookcases, which a carpenter had integrated with MDF to create a custom built-in appearance spanning three walls. Our task was to elevate these practical bookcases into a sophisticated, cohesive library through professional painting in the client’s chosen contemporary colour scheme.
Our Approach
To minimize disruption to the client’s home, we implemented an efficient dual-location workflow. We took away all 40 shelves to be painted at our workshop, allowing one team member to work on-site painting the bookcase frames while another simultaneously prepared and painted the shelves. This approach significantly reduced our time in the client’s property.
The project presented several technical challenges. The Billy Bookcases feature a tough enamel finish that requires specialized preparation to ensure paint adhesion and longevity. Our process included:
1. Thorough sanding of all surfaces to create a proper key for the primer
2. Filling all screw holes and imperfections
3. Application of Benjamin Moore Stix primer—specifically selected for its superior adhesion properties
4. Finishing with Benjamin Moore Scuff X Eggshell paint in Farrow & Ball’s Middleton Pink and Cola
The Colour Story
The client drew inspiration from a delicious cake, selecting a beautiful colour combination of light pink (Farrow & Ball’s Middleton Pink) and rich brown (Farrow & Ball’s Cola). This sophisticated palette transformed the functional storage unit into a stunning focal point that beautifully balances contemporary design with the warmth expected in a personal library.
The Final Touch
The final stage of returning the approximately 40 shelves presented an unexpected puzzle, as they hadn’t been numbered during removal. Our team carefully sorted and placed each shelf, ensuring they fit perfectly in their intended positions.
The completed library beautifully demonstrates how thoughtful design, quality materials, and professional craftsmanship can transform standard furniture into bespoke built-ins that enhance both the function and aesthetic of a space.
