The Challenge
A grand Georgian townhouse kitchen in Edinburgh’s West End with ceilings over 4 metres high and ornate period cornicing. The client had bold Sapphire Salute Blue kitchen units and existing Deluxe Florentine Red walls — a striking scheme that needed refreshing while keeping its historic charm.
The soaring ceilings meant internal scaffolding was essential. And the intricate Georgian cornicing needed spray painting for an even, professional finish that brushwork couldn’t achieve.
Our Approach
Scaffolding and Preparation
We erected internal scaffolding to safely reach the 4-metre ceilings and cornicing. All kitchen surfaces, appliances, and the blue units were fully sheeted and protected. The ornate cornice was carefully cleaned, filled where needed, and prepared for spray painting.
Colour Choice — Farrow & Ball Ammonite
We recommended Farrow & Ball’s Ammonite — a warm natural beige that would complement the bold blue units and balance the red feature elements. Two full coats applied to all walls for even, consistent coverage.
Spray-Painted Cornicing
The Georgian cornice was spray-painted in clean white using our HVLP system. This preserves every detail of the delicate mouldings while giving an even, factory-smooth finish. The ceiling was also painted to lift and brighten the space.
The Result
The kitchen has been completely refreshed. The soft Ammonite walls frame the bold blue units beautifully, the crisp white ceiling and cornice lift the room, and the intricate Georgian detailing is now properly showcased rather than lost in shadow. All with the existing red accents providing a warm counterpoint.
A grand Edinburgh kitchen brought back to its best — with every period detail preserved and highlighted.
