Project Showcase: Conquering Heights and Colors in Edinburgh's West End

Location: West End, Edinburgh Project Type: Interior Painting Unique Challenges: Exceptionally High Ceilings, Color Harmony, and Preserving Historical Details

In the heart of Edinburgh’s historic West End, our team recently completed an exciting interior painting project that showcased our ability to blend modern techniques with historical preservation. This kitchen renovation in a period property presented us with multiple challenges, each requiring innovative solutions.

The Challenges:

Height: The kitchen boasted a ceiling height of approximately 4 meters (13 feet), posing significant access difficulties.
Colour Harmony: Balancing the client’s chosen Sapphire Salute Blue kitchen units with the existing Deluxe Florentine Red walls.
Historical Preservation: Maintaining the integrity of the original Georgian cornice details while updating the space.
Our Innovative Solutions:

Height: We set up our internal scaffolding system to safely and efficiently reach the high ceiling after realizing a ladder wouldn’t fit through the hallway.
Colour Harmony: We went with Farrow & Ball’s Ammonite, a sophisticated natural beige, to create a cohesive look with the blue kitchen units.
Historical Preservation: We employed a spray painting technique for the ceiling and cornice, ensuring a bright, even finish while preserving the intricate Georgian details.
The Process: After carefully assembling the scaffolding, we prepared the walls for painting with Farrow & Ball Ammonite. For the ceiling and cornice, we used a specialized spray painting method. This technique allowed us to apply a crisp white colour evenly, brightening the space significantly. Most importantly, it preserved the detailed cornice motifs, avoiding the risk of thick brush strokes filling in or obscuring the intricate Georgian designs.

The Result: The kitchen underwent a remarkable transformation:

The Ammonite walls beautifully complemented the Sapphire Salute Blue kitchen units.
The spray-painted white ceiling and cornice brightened the entire space, making it feel larger and more airy.
The original Georgian cornice details were beautifully preserved and highlighted, adding a touch of historical elegance to the modern kitchen design.
Client Satisfaction: Our client was ecstatic with the results. They were particularly impressed by:

Our innovative problem-solving approach to the high ceilings.
The harmonious color scheme that tied the whole room together.
Our ability to modernize the space while respecting and enhancing its historical features.
What We Learned: This project reinforced the importance of blending traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. It demonstrated our ability to:

Adapt to challenging spaces in period properties.
Create beautiful color harmonies in complex settings.
Utilize advanced painting techniques to preserve historical architectural details.
