Colour Drenching and Landscape Wallpaper Murals in Edinburgh's West End

The Challenge

The first floor of this traditional West End townhouse was being decorated while new joinery and flooring were installed. The work needed to be coordinated with other trades, with careful preparation around the original cornicing, window surrounds and newly fitted cabinets.

Our Approach

1. Protected the rooms, including floors, bathroom fittings and surrounding surfaces, and adapted the decorating sequence as other work progressed.
2. Cleaned and prepared walls and ceilings, then filled and sanded cracks, holes and minor imperfections. Prepared skirtings, door frames, window panelling and new cabinets, using primer where needed to help the paint bond.
3. Carried Farrow & Ball Dead Salmon across the walls and ceiling of the master bedroom and dressing area. Using one colour throughout the space is known as colour drenching.
4. Installed woodland landscape wallpaper murals between the lower wall panelling and picture rails in two further bedrooms, alongside Farrow & Ball Salon Drab.
5. Spray painted the ornate cornicing to retain its detail, finished the prepared joinery, and decorated the bathroom walls and ceiling with Zinsser Perma-White Mould Resistant Matt.

The Result

The completed first-floor rooms bring warm colour and woodland murals into the townhouse while keeping its original architectural detail in view. Painted panelling, window surrounds and cabinetry sit alongside the wallpaper, and the ornate cornicing retains its crisp definition.
