Bespoke Panelled Room Transformation in Clinton Road, Edinburgh

The Challenge

This Clinton Road interior featured full-height traditional wall panelling, decorative cornicing and detailed woodwork throughout. Movement cracks in the timber from natural expansion needed careful filling and shaping, the ceiling had previously been finished in oil-based paint and required adhesion priming, and integrated LED strips set into the cornice, alcove shelving and fireplace surround had to be masked and protected throughout. The client wanted a clean, contemporary finish that kept the character of the original panelling.

Our Approach

1. Protection. Floors and the newly fitted kitchen cabinets were carefully masked and protected before work began. The integrated LED light strips within the cornice, alcove shelving and fireplace surround were masked throughout.
2. Detailed preparation. Every crack, hole and joint within the panelled walls and woodwork was meticulously filled, shaped and sanded to achieve a refined finish. Masks were worn during sanding at the client’s request.
3. Ceiling and cornice. Cleaned, sanded and primed using adhesion primer to bond cleanly over the previous oil-based paint, before finishing in white matt emulsion.
4. Woodwork and panelling. Doors and frames, skirting boards, full wall panelling, window surround panelling, mantelpiece, shelving and cupboard interiors prepared in full. The recessed shelving, cupboard interiors and selected details were finished in white eggshell; the remaining woodwork and panelling in a warm yellow eggshell (0520-Y-20R).
5. Clean workmanship. The work area was kept organised at every stage, with minimal disruption to the household.

The Result

The room is bright, elegant and full of character. The clean white ceiling and cornice frame the warm yellow panelling and refined woodwork, and the integrated LED strips bring the detailing to life in the evenings. The original architectural craftsmanship is preserved and the finishes sit cleanly across every joint and detail.
