Painting an 8-door custom MDF wardrobe to a smooth, durable finish with minimal disruption
The Challenge
A custom-built MDF wardrobe with eight doors, designed to fit the client’s space perfectly. The goal: a clean, neutral off-white finish that would look elegant and stand up to daily use — opening, closing, and the occasional bump.
Eight large doors meant a lot of surface area to prepare and paint to a consistent standard. And the client needed to keep using the room, so minimising disruption was essential.
Our Approach
Offsite Door Finishing
We removed all eight doors and their hinges, then took them to our workshop. This dramatically reduced disruption in the client’s home — no fumes, no spray dust, no days of restricted access. The carpet was protected with self-adhesive film throughout.
On-Site Frame Preparation
While the doors were at the workshop, we prepared the wardrobe frames on-site. Every gap was filled, surfaces primed with specialist MDF primer, and sanded smooth. We used an industrial extractor to keep dust to an absolute minimum.
Paint Application
Two topcoats of tough, water-based enamel paint were applied — a finish that’s durable enough for daily use, with a smooth, timeless look. The same finish was applied to the doors in our workshop for perfect consistency.
Reinstallation
Each door was reinstalled and every hinge adjusted for a perfect fit. The space was left spotless.
The Result
The wardrobe looks like it was installed finished. The smooth off-white enamel gives a clean, contemporary feel, and the durable finish means it’ll stay looking that way through years of daily use. Eight doors, all consistent, all perfectly hung.
