How Long Does Painting a Room Take in Edinburgh?
Realistic timelines for bedroom repaints, living rooms, hallways and full flat decorating projects.
How Long Does Interior Decorating Actually Take?
One of the first questions Edinburgh homeowners ask when planning a decorating project is: how long will it take? The honest answer is that it depends — on the size of the room, the condition of the walls, the type of finish you want, and the kind of property you live in.
A compact bedroom in a modern flat is a very different job from a high-ceilinged living room in a Marchmont tenement or a multi-storey hallway in a Morningside villa. Below are some realistic timelines based on the projects we carry out as painters and decorators in Edinburgh.
Typical Decorating Timelines
Bedroom Repaint
1 – 2 days
A standard bedroom repaint — walls, ceiling and woodwork — typically takes one to two days. This includes preparation, priming where needed, two coats of emulsion on the walls and ceiling, and gloss or satin on the woodwork. If the walls are in good condition and the colours are similar to the existing finish, it can be done in a single day.
Living Room Repaint
2 – 3 days
Living rooms are usually larger and often have more woodwork — skirting boards, door frames, window reveals and sometimes picture rails or dado rails. In Edinburgh tenement flats with high ceilings and decorative cornicing, allow an extra half day for careful cutting in and preparation around period features.
Hallway and Stairs
2 – 4 days
Hallways and stairwells are among the trickiest spaces to paint. Access is often awkward, ceilings can be very high, and there is usually a lot of woodwork — bannisters, newel posts, spindles, door frames. In Victorian villas across Trinity and Morningside, hallways can extend over two or three floors, requiring tower scaffolding or specialist access equipment.
Full Flat Repaint
5 – 8 days
A full two-bedroom flat repaint — every room, hallway and all woodwork — typically takes around a working week, sometimes longer if there is extensive preparation or wallpaper removal involved. We work room by room to keep disruption to a minimum, and for larger properties we can deploy additional decorators to meet tight deadlines.
What Affects How Long Decorating Takes?
Several factors can add time to a decorating project:
- Wall condition — Cracks, damp patches, flaking paint or old wallpaper all need addressing before new paint goes on. In older Edinburgh properties, this preparation stage can take as long as the painting itself.
- Ceiling height — High ceilings in tenement flats and period homes require more time and sometimes scaffolding for safe access.
- Dark or bold colours — Going from a dark colour to a light one (or vice versa) usually means extra coats and careful priming.
- Woodwork — Sanding, priming and painting woodwork is detailed, time-consuming work. Properties with panelled doors, deep skirting boards and original shutters need more time than modern flat-panel doors.
- Wallpaper removal — Stripping old wallpaper adds at least half a day per room, sometimes more if there are multiple layers.
