Refreshing 40-year-old varnished furniture to match newly painted wood panelling
The Challenge
A cosy cottage just outside Edinburgh with a kitchen-dining area featuring wood-panelled walls and solid furniture that had been in the family for over 40 years. The client didn’t want to replace any of it — just bring it back to life.
The challenge: the existing clear varnish finish had worn down over decades. The pieces needed a complete refresh that would modernise the look without losing the warmth and character of the originals.
Our Approach
Cleaning and Preparation
Each piece was carefully cleaned and lightly sanded to remove the worn varnish and create a key for the new finish. We took care not to damage the solid wood underneath.
Painting — Tikkurila Everal Aqua 40
We used Tikkurila Everal Aqua 40 in Farrow & Ball’s Ammonite, colour-matched to the dining area’s freshly painted panelling. The soft light grey brought a clean, modern edge to the pieces while keeping their traditional shape and proportions.
Tabletops and Accents
For the tabletops and sideboard top, we applied a white wood stain for gentle contrast, sealed with clear varnish for daily durability.
The Result
The furniture set now feels fresh yet familiar. The soft Ammonite grey modernises the pieces without erasing their character, and the stained tabletops add just enough contrast to keep things interesting. A 40-year-old dining set that looks like it belongs in a contemporary cottage kitchen — because it does.
