Cottage Furniture Makeover – Timeless Meets Fresh
This project took us just outside the city, to a cosy cottage filled with character and charm. The kitchen-dining area had great bones—wood-panelled walls, warm tones, and a well-loved set of furniture that had been part of the home for over 40 years. The pieces were solid, full of history, but in need of a little care to bring them back to their best.
The client didn’t want to replace them—just refresh them so they’d sit better alongside the existing decor. We worked to keep the character intact while updating the finish, using soft greys and gentle white stains to give everything a lighter, more modern feel. The end result kept the soul of the furniture but gave the whole room a more pulled-together, welcoming look.
The Challenge
The pieces had a clear varnish finish that had worn down over decades of use. We needed to restore them without losing their character—and make sure they tied in with the soft, rustic tones of the cottage.
Our Approach
Prep & Paintwork
We cleaned and lightly sanded every piece to ensure a perfect painting surface. Using Tikkurila Everal Aqua 40 in Farrow & Ball’s Ammonite, we colour-matched the furniture to the dining area’s panelling. The soft, light grey brought a clean, modern edge without feeling out of place.
Custom Finishing Touches
For the tabletops and sideboard top, we applied a white wood stain to introduce a gentle contrast, then sealed them with a clear varnish for added durability and everyday use.
The Result
The updated set now feels fresh yet familiar. The soft grey tone adds lightness and elegance, while the white-stained tops bring subtle contrast and warmth. The transformation blends perfectly with the existing decor, giving the space a unified, inviting look.
