The Challenge
A local joiner, Andrew Hay, had built a bespoke media unit in raw MDF for an open-plan kitchen-living area. The unit was designed to be a centrepiece — but raw MDF looks unfinished. It needed a smooth, durable white finish that would look workshop-quality.
The challenge: spray painting inside an occupied home without overspray reaching kitchen worktops, appliances, or soft furnishings. And doing it to a standard that matched the craftsmanship of the joinery.
Our Approach
Creating a Spray Zone
We built a fully enclosed spray zone using plastic sheeting to contain all overspray. The floor was protected with self-adhesive film. This meant we could spray on-site without any risk to the client’s home — no paint dust on worktops, no fumes spreading through the house.
Preparation and Painting
Every surface was filled, smoothed, and primed with specialist MDF primer. We then applied two fine topcoats of tough, water-based white enamel using our precision spray system. The spray technique gives an even, factory-smooth finish with no brush marks or roller texture.
Once the unit was finished, we painted the surrounding walls to tie the room together, then removed all sheeting and cleaned up the space.
The Result
The media unit looks like it came from a high-end furniture showroom — smooth, durable, and perfectly finished in clean white. It’s the kind of result that makes bespoke MDF joinery worth the investment. The client and the joiner were both delighted.
